HireRight Launches 2020 Global Benchmark Report

Global businesses remain vulnerable to workforce misrepresentation

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- HireRight, a leading provider of global employment background checks, drug testing, education verification, E-Verify solutions, and other workforce solutions, announced today the release of its 2020 Global Employment Screening Benchmark Report. The report is based on the findings of HireRight’s 13th Annual Benchmarking survey, with almost 1,700 Human Resources professionals worldwide contributing to the survey with their insights, providing a global view of the background screening landscape.

Among key take-aways, the survey found that:

  • 32% of participating global companies do not conduct checks on any of their extended workforce
  • 54% of responding employers around the globe are finding discrepancies in their candidates’ employment histories
  • 68% of participating global enterprises verify their candidates’ education credentials, compared to just 39% of small/medium-sized businesses (SMBs) who do the same

The report reveals that despite the rapid growth of the gig and remote working economy, only 48% of businesses perform background checks on their temporary workers, and even fewer screen their independent contractors, interns, and volunteers, despite them potentially having the same access to sensitive information as their permanent workforce.

This data comes at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has driven remote working to unprecedented levels, raising concerns about the security processes in place to protect businesses from the new potential threats of having a large mobile workforce. The findings of the report suggest that rescreening your existing workforce could be a possible solution, with 48% of businesses globally reporting that they benefited from more consistent safety and security as a result of employment screening.

The report’s findings also articulate how screening practices and considerations vary regionally; for example, previous employment is the most common pre-employment check conducted in EMEA and APAC, but it ranks just fifth in the U.S. and Canada, where criminal and identity checks are most widely conducted.

“Our 2020 Global Benchmark Report reflects comprehensive thought leadership from HireRight subject matter experts across the globe, sharing insights on local compliance, the future of screening technology, and the nuances of screening in international markets,” said Guy Abramo, Chief Executive Officer of HireRight. “This year we’ve created a single global report because we believe that now more than ever, it’s important for businesses to look at what their peers are doing around the world and consider background screening from a global perspective.”
